BOLD Physiological Noise Reduction using Spatio-Spectral-Temporal Correlations with NIRS

چکیده
Introduction: Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and BOLD fMRI measure complementary quantities relating to changes in the concentration of oxyand deoxyhemoglobin (HbO and HbR respectively) [1]. NIRS offers superior temporal resolution (40ms versus 2000ms), whereas BOLD offers superior spatial resolution and whole brain coverage. We are exploring the NIRS and BOLD relationship through simultaneous acquisition on human subjects in a resting-state scan along with measures of systemic physiology (respiration and cardiac). We have found that the NIRS time courses can account for approximately 25% of the resting-state BOLD fluctuations in cortex beyond that accounted for by the physiological measures alone. The spatial pattern of the NIRS-BOLD correlation was highly dependent on frequency band, and in surprising ways differed between HbO and HbR.

The utility of near-infrared spectroscopy in the regression of low-frequency physiological noise from functional magnetic resonance imaging data
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) signals have been shown to correlate with resting-state BOLD-fMRI data across the whole brain volume, particularly at frequencies below 0.1Hz. While the physiological origins of this correlation remain unclear, its existence may have a practical application in minimizing the background physiological noise present in BOLD-fMRI recordings. We performed simultaneo...

Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies using parallel imaging to reduce the readout window have reported a loss in temporal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that is less than would be expected given a purely thermal noise model. In this study, the impact of parallel imaging on the noise components and functional sensitivity of both BOLD and perf...

Fluctuations of the white-light supercontinuum produced by ultrashort laser pulses in selfguided filaments (spatio-temporal solitons) in air are investigated. We demonstrate that correlations exist within the white-light supercontinuum, and that they can be used to significantly reduce the laser intensity noise by filtering the spectrum. More precisely, the fundamental wavelength is anticorrela...

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used to noninvasively monitor adult human brain function in a wide variety of tasks. While rough spatial correspondences with maps generated from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have been found in such experiments, the amplitude correspondences between the two recording modalities have not been fully characterized. To do so, we simultaneou...
متن کاملSimultaneous quantitative assessment of cerebral physiology using respiratory-calibrated MRI and near-infrared spectroscopy in healthy adults
BACKGROUND Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and functional MRI (fMRI) are non-invasive techniques used to relate activity in different brain regions to certain tasks. Respiratory calibration of the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal, and combined fNIRS-fMRI approaches have been used to quantify physiological subcomponents giving rise to the BOLD signal. A comparison of abso...
